Self-Awareness - Your Key to Navigating Your Life's Journey

February 22, 2024

Know Thyself

Self-awareness is critical to navigating the waters of our life's journey. It's not enough to practice self-awareness; you ought to understand the benefits of engaging in this critical skill and implementing it in your daily endeavors.

"Know thyself," the ancient adage implores. As an aspiring future Industrial/Organizational Psychologist deeply entrenched in the study of workplace behavior and inspired by thought leaders like Jordan B. Peterson and Carol Dweck, I argue that understanding oneself is not merely a self-indulgent exercise. It's a fundamental necessity for anyone wishing to master the dual domains of personal development and professional growth. Believe me, there is a great overlap in professional and personal development.

Much like the mythological Ouroboros—a snake consuming its tail in an eternal loop of renewal—your self-awareness feeds into your professional life, which in turn feeds back into your self-awareness. This recursive cycle demands constant attention, lest we become trapped in a fixed mindset, as Dweck would caution us. It is far too easy for us to get lost in the chaos of potential.

If you were unaware, here are some benefits of Self-Awareness:

  1. Enhanced Emotional Intelligence: A deep sense of self-awareness lets you recognize your emotional patterns and how those patterns influence those around you. Thus, you become a more effective communicator and leader.
  2. Conflict Resolution: By understanding your triggers and behavioral cues, you can approach conflict in a balanced and mature manner. The workplace is a battlefield of ideas and personalities; knowing oneself is the first step in negotiating it effectively.
  3. Career Development: The more you understand about your strengths, weaknesses, and passion, the better equipped you are to navigate your career path. You become capable of positioning yourself in roles that suit you and enable you to offer maximal value.
  4. Improved Adaptability: Carol Dweck's concept of a "growth mindset" is almost synonymous with self-awareness. Understanding that skills and intelligence can be developed makes you more apt to adapt and learn, even in adverse conditions. Look up Caron Dweck's book Mindset: The New Psychology of Success - it's a must-read!
  5. Holistic Well-being: Jordan B. Peterson often talks about taking responsibility for one’s life. Self-awareness empowers you to take control, thereby enhancing not just job satisfaction but life satisfaction.

Here are Five Steps to Bolster Self-Awareness: My personal favorite is number 1.

  1. Deep Reflection: Spend quiet moments pondering your actions, decisions, and feelings. Write them down if you can. Peterson's "self-authoring" exercises can be particularly revealing.
  2. Seek Feedback: But not indiscriminately. Find people who know you well and whose opinions you trust. Dweck suggests that constructive feedback is a tool for growth, not a weapon of judgment.
  3. Question Thyself: When faced with decisions or emotional reactions, ask yourself, 'Why?' Uncover the motivations and fears that guide you. Take a note from Simon Sinek’s Start with Why – if you have yet to see his viral Ted Talk, look it up, you won’t be disappointed.
  4. Observe Others: Observing how others react to similar situations can offer a mirror into your own behavior. This enhances your social awareness, which is a vital component of emotional intelligence.
  5. Regular Check-ins: Make it a habit to routinely assess how you're doing in terms of your career and emotional well-being. Are you progressing or stagnating?

Self-awareness is not a destination but an ongoing journey. It requires the conscientiousness to improve oneself constantly, and the openness to embrace the variety of experiences life offers. By intertwining the principles elucidated by Peterson and Dweck, I believe that each of us can navigate both the labyrinth of our inner world and the complex maze of our professional lives.

So, venture forth into the deepest recesses of your being and emerge more enlightened, ready to conquer both your internal and external worlds.

Transcend Into the Form You Were Meant to Be from the Start

Control Your Breath, Control Your Inner Self, Gain Mindfulness for Everyday Life I've experimented with various forms of meditation and breathing techniques over the years. There was even a point where I documented the quality of my day and compared which technique and duration of meditation had the greatest impact. Of course, there are day-to-day differences, and unique events and stressors will vary for each person. Generally, on a typical day, breathwork has made a notable difference in my perceived anxiety levels. Try these breathwork methods and let me know if they made a noticeable difference for you.

"To Know is Good, To Understand is Divine" - Daniel Fournier While the quote at the center of this article is one, I personally hold dear, I invite you to engage with the text and ponder its broader implications. For too long, I've kept the profound impact of this phrase close to my heart. Now, I believe it's time to bring this discussion into the open, particularly within organizational contexts. The distinction between 'knowing' and 'understanding' is more than semantic; it's foundational. Ascending the ladder of knowledge is commendable, but it's merely a steppingstone on the journey toward true understanding.
